| 摘要 | 식물은 정서적으로 인간의 마음을 치유하는 도구이며 인간의 생활과도 불가분의 관계에 있다. 불교는 식물을 포함한 자연을 중시하는 종교이며 식물의 존재는 결코 불교적 철학의 범주에서 벗어나 있지 않다. 따라서 불교 경전에 수록된 식물들을 식물학적으로 탐구하여 식물들이 가진 상징성을 담아내면 그것은 식물학이 아닌 종교와 철학의 영역이 된다. 한편 인류문화의 역사는 상징의 역사라 할 만큼 의사 전달의 중요한 요소로서 다양한 것들을 상징으로 사용해 왔다. 종교에서도 성스러움을 드러내거나 의미를 명확히 전달하기 위해 그림과 형상물, 문양 등 다양한 상징물들을 이용해 왔으며 불교도 예외가 아니다. 불교 경전에서도 여러 가지 상징물을 사용해 왔는데 식물도 그 중 하나이다. 불교 경전 속의 식물 연구는 대상이 되는 경전이 방대하고, 논서와 주석서는 물론 이역본도 존재하므로 연구 경전의 범위 설정이 선행되어야 한다. 또한 초기 경전이 중국으로 들어와 한역되는 과정은 음역과 의역이 모두 이루어졌고 심지어 한 단어 내에서도 음역과 의역이 동시에 이루어졌으며 우리나라에 들어오면서 의미까지 바뀌는 사례도 빈번하였다. 초기 경전의 이해를 바탕으로 한 경전 속 식물연구는 불교를 이해하는 새로운 패러다임으로서의 가치가 있다. 불교가 오랜 역사와 전통 속에서 문화와 생활양식 전반에 걸쳐 영향을 미쳐왔다는 점을 인식한다면 그 상징성을 재조명하고 발현시킨다는 점에서 의미가 있을 것이다. 이에 따라 본고는 연구의 의미를 정리하고, 연구의 표본을 제시하여 경전 속 식물 연구에 관한 담론을 이끌어내고자 하였다. The plant is a tool to heal the human mind, and is also inextricably linked to human life. Buddhism is a religion that values nature, including plants, so the plants are never away from the philosophy of Buddhism. Therefore, when we explore the plants which are listed in the Buddhist scriptures as botanical and show the meanings of plants as symbol, it is no longer botany but the religion and philosophy. On the other hand, it is enough to be called that the history of human culture is the history of symbol because human nature has been using symbol as an important factor of communication. The religion, for showing sacredness of God and the meaning of Bible clearly, has been using a variety of symbols such as pictures, patterns, and shapes and the Buddhism is not an exception. The plants are one of Buddhism symbols. It is important that the range setting of scriptures must take precedence in order for studying plants which are included in Buddhist scriptures properly because the range of scriptures is so vast and there are many other version of scriptures such as Treatise and commentary with another version. Furthermore, when the scripture was handed down to China, the translation process was not precise. The scripture was translated by confused way, for example, the criteria of translation are plural, transliteration and liberal translation. Even meaning was changed when the scripture was handed down into our country. So studying plants based on the comprehension of early scripture is very worthwhile as a new paradigm for understanding Buddhism precisely. If we recognize that the Buddhism has influenced our culture and lifestyle for a long time, it will be meaningful that this study can refocus and express its symbolism. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to derive the discussion about studying plants in Buddhist scriptures by cleaning up the meaning of study and suggesting a sample of the study. |
