Since ancient times, the vibration of the voice has been seen as the ultimate origin of the way of truth’s being, such as in the “beom” of the Beompae chants which had their roots in Brahman. The voice of the celebrants was connected with the Indian function words of particular sacrificial rites and the vibration of the voice was also emphasised as playing a role in the ruling dynasty. In ancient China the establishment of tone order was regarded as consolidating the dynasty’s basis. Although their musical philosophy was highly developed, the Mantra tones and Buddhist chants were overpowered just by the ‘nothingness’ or ‘naught’ idea of Buddhism. Among all Buddhist chants, the Whoaeomjamo chant consists of the 42 letters of the visible mantra alphabet is the greatest Beompae suit form. Within it contains the idea of the Buddhãvatamsakasutra which is that one is all and all is one. Although the 42 mantra alphabet had and has been conveyed through other sutras before and since, the mantra alphabet songs is only Whoaeomjamo chant which in Buddhãvatamsaka-sutra. I believe there is a necessary relationship between the Buddhãvatamsaka-sutra and this music. At that time, Social status and order was together the musical theory assigned the yin and yang benevolence, in all musical tones was used to support the basic ideology of the ruling dynasty, in order to attempt to establish an ideal dynasty through formal courtesy and music. Through just that musical culture, I have been able to understand and solve the secret chord of the Ganda-vyũha Lit in the Buddhãvatamsakasutra. It is that the order of the 53 Buddhist saints is the mantra of Bodhisattva’s teachings. Migajangja(Jangja means sinior) was a senior of Theravada Buddhism, which transmitted the sutra orally early Buddhism. Sunjijungyedongja was a Saint of Mahayana Buddhism, which had just been formed at that time so his name was Dongja, meaning young person. Also, the Jung of Jungye (‘jung’, 衆, means popular and people) points toward private music rather than court or official music. Meanwhile, the Ye of Jungye (‘Ye’, 藝, means art) indicates that he was a professional musician and a spiritual guide of Buddhism, because musicians at that time were elite philosophers and the senior spiritual intuitions steeped in musical culture. There are, however, no Whoaeomjamo chants in Korea. The tradition may have become extinct due to the suppression of Buddhism during the Josun dynasty, or in the era of Japanese colonalism. In the 21st century, Whoaeomjamo chants have a role to play both in the culture of Buddhism and in private meditation. I would like to suggest that Korean Buddhists p |
