Dignāga (ca. 480-540) defines the meaning of a word as a universal concept called ‘the exclusion of others’ (anyāpoha). According to him, verbal cognition is not a means of cognition separate from inference (anumāṇa), because both cognition and inference enlighten us about an object by a process of excluding all contrary particulars. But the theory of anyāpoha isn’t accepted by realists who regard the meaning of a word as the real entity. Kumārila (ca. 600-660) of the Mīmāṃsā School reinterprets Dignāga’s apoha theory on the basis of nonexistence (abhāva) and real elements. According to Kumarila, ‘the exclusion of others’ (anyāpoha) equates to nonexistence. It is not total nothingness because it signifies a certain kind of existence. That is because nonexistence has some other thing as its locus and exists in dependence on it. Some current scholars see Kumārila (ca. 600-660)’s criticism as supporting their philosophy of language. They claim that anyāpoha can not be established without ultimate reality on the basis of Kumārila’s view. They say anyāpoha can not be fundamentally established and has no place in a philosophy of language. This opinion could be accepted under the premise that Kumārila’s criticisms were right. But it remains to be seen whether Kumārila’s criticism is right or not. Because it isn’t appropriate for Kumārila, a realist, to criticize Dignāga, who declared that the real world consists only of absolutely unique individuals (svalakṣaṇa) not the universality called word-ness. (I don’t know what “word-ness” is but maybe that doesn’t matter.) Dignāga thinks that a word, or linguistic item refers to its own object (svārtham) to the exclusion of others (anyāpohena). And the referent is limited by a word as the result of a conceptual accumulation of the sensory components accepted in the totality of worldly discourse. Namely, whether a word or its own object can be described only on the basis of a custom of language. Dignāga never identifies the universality with a real entity. Actually, it is consistent with the general Buddhist view that a word does not denote ultimate reality. Dignāga lays out a logical basis for the position that verbal cognition (śābda) does not recognize a real entity as having an inherent existence. |
