摘要
조선 개국과 더불어 전개되는 숭유억불 시대로 말미암아 정치⋅사회⋅경제적인 상황 하에 불교의 세력이 크게 위축되었으나, 임진왜란과 병자호란 때 나라를 구하고자 하는 불교계의 적극적인 활약으로 승려들의 사회적 지위 확보는 물론 불교미술 조성활동 또한 새로운 전기를 맞이하게 된다. 18세기 후반과 19세기 초반에 조성된 송광사⋅선암사⋅쌍계사, 그리고 통도사의 화엄칠처구회도는 한국화엄사상의 전래부터 조선 후반기에 이르는 시기까지의 축적된 도상의 특징을 담고 있다. 특히 탄압과 소외를 받던 조선 후기 불교계에서 『화엄경』의 유통과 성행은 변상도의 조성을 촉진시키기도 하였다. 이들 변상도는 그 시원인 돈황 막고굴의 변상도와 그 양식 면에서 좋은 비교가 될 뿐만 아니라 한국불교미술사가 지닌 독자성과 가치를 발견할 수 있다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다.
Buddhist political, social and economic influence was seriously eroded with the advent of the Joseon dynasty which adopted an official policy of venerating Confucianism and suppressing Buddhism. However, with the active role of the Buddhist societies, as well as securing the social status of monks, Buddhist art also entered a new era. The Avatamsaka Chilcheoguhoedo Buddhist Pictures are located at Songgwangsa, Seonamsa, Ssanggyesa and Tongdosa trmple and were created in the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries. They depict the accumulated iconography that began with the introduction of the Avatamsaka Sutra (華嚴經) to Korea up to the late Joseon. In particular, the propagation and the recitation of the Avatamsaka Sutra in the late Joseon Buddhist world, which as already stated was subject to oppression and alienation, also promoted the formation of the Byeonsangdos (變相圖, the paintings of marks of transformation). These Byeonsangdos have great significance in that not only the style of them can be compared to that of the Byeonsangdo originating in the Dunhuang Mogao Caves but also they can give us insight into the identity and the value of Korea Buddhist art history.
