儀禮梵文의 설행유형과 율조 -- 아랫녘수륙재를 통하여 =A Study on the Melody Types of Korean Mantra Chants -- Through the Araetnyeok Suryukjae Buddhist Ritual in Yeongnam Province

摘要
그간 한국의 의례 설행양상을 보면, 범어범패는 게송이나 사설조의 마무리 정도로 쓸어 넘어가는 경우가 많았다. 찬탄과 메시지 전달을 위한 한어범패와 달리 가지실행의 범어범패는 한어범패와 다른 존재이유가 있다. 의례문의 구조를 보면, 한어와 범어의문이 씨줄과 날줄처럼 짜여져 있듯이 범패 또한 마찬가지이다. 아랫녘수륙재의 범어의문과 율조를 조사해 보니 진언⋅주⋅다라니 송주가 100회에 이를 정도였다. 이들의 실행 양상을 보니 다라니는 바라무와 함께 장엄하게 설행되는 데 비해 진언과 주는 대부분 빠른 템포로 간략히 설행되었다. 이들 내용을 좀 더 세밀히 분석해보니, 천수다라니와 사다라니는 앞 뒤에 한문 게송이나 사설조 의문이 둘러싸고 있는데다 바라무까지 수반되어 설행양상이 화려하고 장엄하였다. 진언은 한문 게송과 짝을 이룬 것, 몇 개의 진언이 시리즈로 연결되는 것, 일정한 행동패턴이 순차적으로 진행되는 것, 소청대상이나 공양물에 대한 나열형 등이 있었다. 주(呪)는 중단의 신들을 청할 때 집중되어 있어 토속신앙과 연관이 깊음을 알게 되었다. 이로써 그간 변별력을 찾기 어려웠던 다라니⋅진언⋅주였지만 의례 설행 양상을 통해 그 차이를 확연히 알 수 있었다. 수륙재를 기록한 DVD 11개를 분⋅초 단위로 체크해 보니 범문의 율조는 4가지로 간추려졌다. 제1형은 무박절의 느린 멜리스마 선율, 제2형은 법령과 함께 담담하게 읊는 낭송조, 제3형은 3소박 흥겨운 율조, 제4형은 빠른 2소박의 경쾌한 율조였다. 이들 중 제3형인 3소박 율조는 3소박이 많은 한국 전통장단과 3음보가 많은 한글과 범어의 언어적 특성과 친연성이 많다. 본 연구는 범문⋅한글⋅음악의 융합적 연구의 기반을 마련한 데에 의미를 두고 앞으로 보다 심도 있는 연구로 나아가고자 한다.
Usually, we listen to Chinese lettered songs in Korean Buddhist rituals, whose texts are composed in Chinese and Sanskrit, like the warp and weft of a fabric. This is because Chinese lettered songs are slow and long but the Mantra chants are fast and short. In this study, I discovered that there are many mantra chants with Dhārani, Mantra (眞言), and Joo (呪). over 100 in the grand Buddhist ritual, Suryukjae, As I compared the ritual text with video clips, I saw that most Dhāranis are of a suitable form to be performed with cymbal dancing or hand signs. The melody and rhythm of the Sanskrit chants was fast and syllabically accompanied by percussion instruments. This study clarified, by the analysis of the ritual texts, acting, and the mantra melodies, the difficult points in discerning the difference between Dhārani, Mantra, and Joo. Following a more detailed research, I learned that the Avalokiteśvara Dhārani and Sa Dhārani, grouped according to having only four mantras, have preludes and postludes with Chinese poems. In addition, I discovered several other types of mantra, one type paired with Chinese lettered poems, and another type including a series of mantra ordered one after another, which include ritual acting performed to indicate an object or to display offerings. Besides, Joo songs were generally used for the naming of the Gods, while there were two Joo songs from the Śūraṅgama mantras that were used for making offerings to ghosts. As a result of my investigation, poring through every second of the video clips, I could categorize all of the chants to 4 basic types. The first had no rhythm and a very slow melismatic melody. The second was a fast and syllabic melody, as in reciting a book. The third was a cheerful rhythm with triple metric beats accompanied by percussion instruments, whilst the last was a light and fast rhythmic melody with two metric beats. The second type is most common. It was called a Mantra chanting sound by the monks in Yeongnam province, South Korea. The tempo of most mantra chants is fast, partially due to the fact that the Buddhist monks had to remember the texts by repeatedly reciting in an era before the invention of Korean characters suitable for Korean chanting.
