오늘날 현재 한국불교에서 가장 대중적인 독경 경전 중의 하나가 『천수경(千手經)』이다. 『천수경』이 이렇게 대중적인 독경 경전으로서 지위를 차지하게 된 것은 무엇보다 『천수경』의 참회사상과 이와 더불어 행해지는 참회진언수행법 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 『천수경』에 나타난 참회사상의 신앙형태와 특징, 그리고 참회수행법과 깨달음의 문제에 대해 살펴보았다. 그 결과 『천수경』은 진언을 통한 발원과 그러한 발원으로 인하여 삼업(三業)을 멸하여 불도(佛道)를 이루는 타력적 신앙 체계가 현저하다는 점이다. 그리고 그러한 진언 발원에서 자비원(慈悲願)과 홍원(弘願) 같은 참회가 강조되며, 중생스스로 삼학(三學)을 배우고 보리심(菩提心)과 법성신(法成身)을 추구한다는점에서 자력적인 측면도 갖추고 있다. 즉 『천수경』의 참회수행법의 결과는선(禪) 수행법과 마찬가지로 마음을 깨치는 데 있다. 『천수경』에 나타난 참회사상의 진정한 의미는 업장 소멸이 곧 깨달음이며, 업장 소멸은 마음을 없앰으로서 가능하다는 것이다. 따라서 『천수경』의 참회법은 실체하지 않는 것들에 굳이 집착하거나 스스로 탐착해 묶여 있음을 깨닫고, 마음의 본성을 밝히는데 있다. 이처럼 『천수경』의 참회사상은 단순히 죄업을 소멸하는 데 끝나지 않고, 깨달음을 획득하는 데 있다. 그러한 의미에서 『천수경』은 선어록과마찬가지로 깨달음의 경전이다. 그러므로 선 수행과 마찬가지로 참회 수행에있어서도 점수적 참회와 돈오적 참회로 나눌 수 있다. 사참과 이참의 이중적수행법의 구조에 토대해 본래와 현실, 점수와 돈오를 중도적으로 아우른다는점에서 『천수경』은 반야와 화엄 그리고 선의 수행법과 그 흐름을 같이 한다.
Today “the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara sutra”(『千手經』) is one of the most popular sutra in Korean Buddhism. That’s because of Repentance Thought and mantra of repentance. This paper searches the meaning and characteristics of Repentance Thought in the current “the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara sutra”(『千手經』). Its real significance lies in the idea that the extinction of karma is awakening, and it can be reached by removing one’s mental remnants. As a result, “the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara sutra”(『千手經』) emphasizes religious reliance upon others by counsel. But on the other side, it emphasizes one’s own efforts, too. While repentance is central, sentient beings are expected to learn ti-sikkha (三學) by themselves and pursue Buddha’s teachings in their aspiration for Buddhahood. Then The result of repentance in the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara sutra (『千手經』) is realization of one’s own mind like in Zen practice. So the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara sutra is the sutra of enlightenment. Thus the fulfillment of repentance, as in Zen practice, has two ways of sudden enlightenment and gradual enlightenment. So the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara sutra is based on sacham (事懺) and icham (理懺)’s dual structure and join together the positions of origin and reality in sudden enlightenment (頓悟) and gradual practice (漸修). Thus, it has the same way of Buddhist practice as in the Prajna (般若), the Avatamska (華嚴), and the Zen practice.
