『유마경현소』의 찬술 이유와 주소(注疏) 방향 - 오중현의를 중심으로 =The Background and Orientation of the Interpretation in the “Wei-mo-ching xuan-shu” -- With Reference to the Five Categories of Abstruse Meanings
천태지의는 50대에 이르러 비로소 법화삼대부라는 교관의 탑을 쌓기 시작하여, 말년에는 유마경소라는『유마경』의 해석서를 통해 교리와 관법의 총체적 완성을 꾀하게 된다. 그러한 그가 경전을 해석할 때에는 자신만의 독특한 방식으로 구사하고 있다. 특히『유마경현소』에서는 오중현의의 해석법을 가지고 경전제목을 해석하고 경전의 대의 등을 드러내고 있다. 오중현의의 방법으로 『유마경』의 주요사상을 상세하게 논한 것인데, 부사의를 핵심으로 하여 원관과 원교에 관통하여 삼관사교 각 방면에 걸쳐 서술한 것이다. 비록『유마경』이 소승의 교리를 드러내는데 편중되었다고는 하지만, 원만하게 대승의 원융적 의미를 뽑아내었다. 특히, 지의는 중국 고승으로서 중국의 유교적인 환경 속에서, 인도에서 전해진『유마경』을 해석하면서 불교 이외에도 중국적 현학과 유교사상 등을 적절하게 운용하였다. 이후 오중현의는 천태종뿐만 아니라 기타 여러 종파에도 적지 않은 영향을 미쳤다. 오중현의는 비록 지의가 창안한 일종의 독창적인 해석법이지만 불교 전반에 걸친 보편적인 방법으로 인정되므로『유마경』 뿐만 아니라 모든 경전에도 통용되는 방법이기도 하다. 지의의 생존시부터 중국의 많은 법사들은 이에 의거해 경전을 강의하였고, 오늘날에도 여전히 사용하는 관례를 형성했다는 점에서, 지의의 ‘오중현의’가 미치는 영향이 어느 정도였는지를 짐작할 수 있다.
In general, T'ien-t'ai Chih-i’s works can be divided into two categories, “Xuan-Yi” and “Wen-Ju.” “Xuan-Yi” signifies the quintessence of a scripture which is based on the interpretation of the scripture’s name. “Wen-Ju” is to explicate the implication of the scripture through the meanings of every single word or phrase. In this article, the author analyzes the methodology of the writings of “Xuan-Yi” according to the Chih-i’s manuscript “Wei-mo-ching xuan-shu” in his later years. Firstly, the author outlines the internal and external causes, specifying the writing process of “Wei-mo-ching xuan-shu”. Secondly, the author discusses the writing method of Five Mysterious Meanings and the interpretation of the six meanings, and expatiate the principal meaning of “Xuan-Shu.” According to the methodology and the content of “Xuan-Shu”, the Chinese characteristics will be introduced, which reveals Chih-i’s thought and the development of Buddhism in China after having been transmitted to China from India.
