摘要
누란(樓欄, Loulan)은 실크로드 상에서 역사가 그리 길지 않은 고대 국가이다. 그러나 인도 쿠샨제국과 민족·언어·풍습을 같이 하면서 동시에 중국의 언어·생활 필수품의 측면을 공유하는 동서문화의 융합체와도 같은 면모를 지닌 국가였다. 누란의 역사와 주변부와의 관계성에서 나타나는 문화융합의 모습은 불교교단 내에도 영향을 끼친다. 불교 사상과 문화를 받아들임과 동시에 제도적인 부분도 함께 받아들이는데, 수용과정 혹은 발전과정에서 많은 변화를 일으킨다. 인도 불교교단 내에서는 볼 수 없었던 제도적인 부분에 왕의 직접적인 개입과 통치, 상벌(賞罰)에까지 관여하는 모습을 보여주고 있다. 또한 누란 불교교단에서는 승려의 사유재산을 공식적으로 인정하고 있는데, 가능한 승려의 범주가 인도와는 확연히 차이가 있어 인도문화권이라 하더라도 인도 불교교단이 그대로 이식(移植)되었다고 보기에는 어려운 양면성을 지니고 있다. 이러한 양상은 단순히 지역을 달리 한 불교이기 때문이라고 설명하기에는 무리가 있다. 때문에 역사와 문화 속에서 자연스럽게 이루어진 불교전파 과정에서 일어 난, 역사와 문화를 기반에 둔 상대적 발전이었다는 점으로 이해할 수 있겠다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 불교의 상대적 발전 양상을 누란의 예를 통해 살펴보았다.
Loulan was an ancient kingdom along the Silk Road that existed for a short period. It had been mostly affected by the language and culture of Kushan Dynasty of India, but it had also been affected by Han Dynasty of China due to its geographical factor. Consequently, this kingdom became a convergence of cultures from both the East and the West. Loulan had accepted Buddhist ideas and cultures from India. As it had developed the religion, there had been many changes in its institutional ways. For example, the king of Loulan had a hand on the religious system in matters such as the administration and the reward and punishment of the Buddhist order. Also, the Buddhist order of Loulan officially permitted the private property of its monks as India’s Buddhist order did. But there was a difference at the limit of permission. Loulan’s Buddhist order permitted more monks to have their own private property than India’s one. These differences mean that, as India’s Buddhism had spread to the East, some elements changed and settled down in Loulan. The changes had actually arisen based on its history and culture, not simply because of its geographical difference.
