필자는 탄허가 연구한 여러 부문 중에서 禪을 중점적으로 조명하였다. 먼저, 선과 話頭에 대한 그의 인식을 살펴보았다. 그는 깨달음을 ⽬的因으로 보고 이 목적을 성취하기 위한 수단으로 선을 인식하고, 이를 통해 깨달음이라는 궁극의 정상에 이를 수 있다는 단계적 관점을 보인다. 탄허의 단계적 선 관념은 화두를 보는 관점에서도 드러난다. 화두의 정체성이라고 할 수 있는 疑團(문젯거리)을 간과함으 로써 死句와 活句의 개념에서도 흐릿한 인식을 보여준다. 탄허는 禪的 사유보다는 敎學的 이론에 더 친숙함을 보인다. 그런 까닭에 수행법에서도 根機의 차별을 내세우고 가르침의 단계를 주장한다. 臨濟三句 또한 단계적 우열적인 관계로 처리한다. 사다리처럼 시설해 놓은 단계는 궁극의 정점을 상정하기 마련이고 이에 도달하는 것이 목적이 된다. 탄허에게는 그것이 向上一路이다. 이는 조사들이 三句 든 향상일로든 방편으로 활용하고 하나의 화두로 다루는 방식과는 크게 동떨어진 인식이다. 道義的 인간, 향상일로, 會通 등에 몰입하고 이를 理想으로 여긴 탄허 이지만 그의 의도와는 다르게 禪法과 敎法의 차별점을 무의미하게 無化시킨 측면이 있다.
This article is focused on Seon among the many departments that Tanheo studied. He regarded enlightenment as a final cause, recognized Seon as a means for accomplishing this purpose. A gradual Seon concept of Tanheo is also expressed from his point of view on hwadu. He overlooked hwadu's identity, that is great ball of doubt. For this reason, he also approaches the concept of dead phrases and living phrases inappropriately. Tanheo is based on a teaching theory rather than on a Seon ideas. For this reason, in the method of Seon training, he advocates discrimination against qualification and advocates the stages of teaching. He considers Lin-chi’s ‘three phrases’ to have a stepwise significance, and understands it as a relationship of superiority and inferiority. Therefore, he assumes its ultimate peak, and aims to achieve it. The ultimate ideal for Tanheo is ‘The only way to improve.’ He's method is different from Patriarchs' method of using all the words and phrases, including ‘three phrases’ as a convenience. He is immersed in a righteous man and harmony and integration and so on, and considers these to be the best ideals. Despite his intention, however, he has rendered the distinction between Seon and teaching methods void.
