Buddhism was introduced to Baekje during the flourishing of Hanseong as its capital city. This fact is stated in The History of the Three Kingdoms (『三國史記』). Of course, according to Japanese literature, Buddhism was accepted into Baekje in the 6th century. Also, no evidence has been confirmed yet to prove the records of Baekje’s acceptance of Buddhism and the construction of Buddhist temples in the late fourth century. In this regard, a temple called Amsa, located on a cliff near the Han River in Amsa-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul revealed the remains of a temple at the end of the Unified Silla Dynasty, but a closer investigation is needed to find out the date when the temple was first established. This is because artifacts linking the roof tiles excavated from the Koguryo temple site in Pyongyang have been excavated. And if you look at the name of the temple Amsa, it is a combination signifying ‘Bawijeol(Rock Temple)’. Besides, Baekje relocated its capital to Sabi Castle during the period, which connects it to the temples called Cheonjeongdae, or Jeongsaam, and Hoamsa, which are located on the cliff along the Baekma River. As you can see in the name of the Hoamsa Temple and the Jeongsaam Temple, the names of the temples were also named after the temple. The name of the temple is also associated with a rock. The rock seemed to function as a place of vows. This might remind us of its function that the subjects could have gathered to meet when deciding on national matters. A temple might have been built in such a sacred place. Also, many of the names of temples have the letter "Am"(巖). The reason seems to be that it is a symbol of immutability and eternal truth. |
