| 摘要 | 리즈 데이비즈(Thomas William Rhys Davids)는 중요한 초기 불교 학자로 꼽히는 인물이며 그가 남긴 학문적 유산은 오늘날 까지도 불교학자들에게 많은 영향을 끼치고 있다. 그러나 리즈 데이비즈란 인물과 그의 업적을 보다 심층적으로 이해하기 위해서는 그가 남긴 단편적인 업적 내용을 넘어 당시 시대 환경, 업적을 이루는 과정 속 다양한 인물들 간의 관계성 등을 종합적으로 고려해야 한다. 본고에서는 리즈 데이비즈의 실론 생활 속 불교와의 만남과 그가 식민지 관료직에서 해고되는 내용을 통해 그동안 많이 알려지지 않은 그의 이야기를 알아볼 것이다. 또한 팔리성전 협회를 세우는 과정 속 많은 아시아인들의 도움, 왕립아시아학회의 사무관직을 통해그가 어떠한 활동을 하였는지 살펴볼 것이다. 이러한 작업을 통해 우리는 그동안 알려진무결의 숭고한 불교학자 리즈 데이비즈가 아닌, 보다 복잡하고 세속적인 오리엔탈리스트, 리즈 데이비즈의 모습을 찾아 볼 수 있다. Thomas William Rhys Davids is considered an important early Buddhist scholar, whose academic heritage still influences Buddhist scholars today. However, in order to have a deeper understanding of the character of Rhys Davids and his achievements, it is necessary to have comprehensive consideration about not only fragmentary context of his achievements, but also the era and the environment in which he lived and the relationship between various figures in the process of accomplishing his achievements. In this article, we will find out about Rhys Davids’s encounter with Buddhism in his life and his dismissal from his position as a colonial officer. We will also look at the help of many Asians in the process of establishing the Pali text society, and Rhys Davids’s activities as a secretary of the Royal asiatic society. Through this work, we can find a more complex and secular orientalist, Rhys Davids, rather than a noble Buddhist scholar known until now. |
