TattvasaṃgrahaおよびTattvasaṃgrahapañjikā第7章第6節「犢子部が構想分別するアートマン（プドガラ）の考察」テキスト考=Text critical Notes on the Tattvasaṃgraha(pañjikā), Chapter 7, Section 6 Titled "Examination of Self (Ātman) as Imagined by the Vātsīputrīya School" : Amendments to the Bauddha Bharati Edition
The Tattvasaṃgraha (TS) written by Śāntarakṣita (ca.725–784) and its commentary, the Tattvasaṃgrahapañjikā (TSP) by Kamalaśīla (ca. 740–797), criticized different types of ātma-vāda or "the doctrine of Self" advocated by the current Indian philosophical thinkerṣ The 6th Section of the TSP, kk.336–349, of Chapter 7 deals with the pudgala theory propounded by the Vātsīputrīya, one of the most influential Buddhist schools in India. Two Sanskrit manuscripts of both TS and TSP are extant at Jaina temples in Jesalmer (TS(P)J) and Pattan (TS(P)P) in India (totally 2×2=4 msṣ). There have so far been published two critical editions, i.e., one by E. Krishnamacharya included in Gaekwad’s Oriental Series (GOS) which was published in 1926 on the basis of TS(P)P, and another edition by ṣ Dwarikadas Shastri which appeared in Bauddha Bharati Series (BBS) in 1968 on the basis of TS(P)J, while occasionally referring to TS(P)P as well as the above GOS edition and Tibetan translation. With the generous assistance of Dr. Hisataka Ishida, I was able to gain access to the clear photos of both TS(P)J and TS(P)P, which allowed me to critically analyze the text of the above-mentioned Section 6 of TS(P)J and TS(P)P. Judging from the critical edition prepared by the author, as well as its diplomatic edition based on TS(P)J, TS(P)P and Tibetan translation of the Section 6, it is possible to suggest approximately seventy readings different from both texts of Krishnamacharya (GOS) and Dwarikadas Shastri’s (BBS). Since Dwarikadas Shastri’s edition (BBS) is the latest one, this article compares significant readings with those found mainly in that edition. Due to the restriction of pages, the present author confines himself to several important readings which this paper proposes differently from both GOS and BBS editionṣ After the Introduction, this article proposes new readings in a table. The table first shows the text by Dwarikadas Shastri (BBS), and then offers new proposed readings, those readings found in TS(P)J and TS(P)P, and other references, i.e., the text by Krishnamacharya (GOS) and Tibetan translation, etc. After providing the table, the following sections of this article discuss in detail some of the important readings with relevant materialṣ Indeed, there have been published a few remarkable translations of Section 6 titled Vātsīputrīyaparikalpitātmaparīkṣ ā. However, some of them whose renderings were based only on either GOS or BBS edition could not escape from misunderstandings partly because of their inaccessibility to the original manuscriptṣ In this respect, the present paper may hopefully overcome, many, if not all, of the hitherto unsolved questions in that Section from a textual viewpoint.
