Problems conceivable from a Buddhistic position can be divided first into the personal and fundamental question, “Why am I living?” and second into the social problem that results from personal and structural pain arising from social structure. The solution to the personal question gave the opportunity and rights of life for sudra to manage a just life, and the solution to the structural problem denied the caste system and solved inequality by classes. The nobility of life is not decided by birth, but by his/her thoughts and behavior. The four noble truths are presented as a methodology to arrive at the purpose, pratityasamutpadah. The four noble truths are duhkha, sumudaya, nirodhaarya and marga. Duhkha is a phenomenon occurred, a presentation of assignment, sumudaya is an investigation of the reason why it happened, a reason for occurrence, nirodhaarya is a status at which an actual problem has been solved, and marga is the method and actions that solved the problems that already occurred. For example, a person visits a clinic for low back pain. Once his/her low back aches, it must be cured. He may have to visit a clinic for the pain or use a folk remedy to cure it. Then, what is this status, a low back pain? It is ‘duhkha’ that Buddha stipulated. If he/she would visit a clinic, he/she may take an X-ray, touch his/her low back and make the cause clear. Is the low back painful? The cause of the pain must be determined if it is painful, because a cartilage supporting the bones is worn out, because the joint is put out of, or because it is a herniated lumbar disc. Finding it out is ‘sumudaya.’ It was turned out to be a herniated lumbar disc as a result of the X-ray. Some kind of prescription must be made to cure this disc either by disc surgery or by correction if not too serious. At last, the low back pain is gone either through surgery or correction. Its recovery is what is called ‘nirodhaarya.’ Then, if it is healed by surgery, the surgery is called as ‘marga.’ If it is corrected, the correction is ‘marga,’ a way of practice. Explaining duhkha, sumudaya, nirodhaarya and marga with a low back pain, the pain itself is duhkha, so ‘duhkha’ is a presentation of an assignment. It is an expression of some problem. Then, ‘sumudaya’ finds out the status and the cause of the pain by using X-ray. We found out why it is painful. That is, ‘sumudaya’ is t |
