中世 金石文소재 불교설화의 通時的 연구 -- 僧碑의 핵심 모티브를 중심으로=A Diachronic Study on Buddhist Tales from Medieval Epigraphic Sources —Based on the Aspects of Acceptance about Key Motives

초기문학사를 복원하는 데 가장 큰 걸림돌은 역시 증거자료의 부족이라 할 것이다. 그런데 금석자료로 눈을 돌린다면 그런 한계가 어느 정도 극복될 수 있음에도 지금까지는 이를 서사문학적 대상으로 활용하는 예가 매우 드물었다. 이점을 직시하여 여기서는 불 교금석문 가운데 서사성을 일정하게 갖춘 승려의 비문을 선별한 후 주요 모티브 별 통시적 특성을 살피고자 하였다. 승비에는 태몽을 비롯하여 다양한 모티브가 발견되는 바, 특히 ①태몽 ②진화구중 ③공주치유 ④호랑이 호위 ⑤용 추방과 사찰건립 등 5가지의 모티브는 승려담의 원형과 함께 후대적 변이양상, 그리고 여타 서사와의 교섭양상을 살필 수 있는 토대가 되고 있다. 검토 결과, ①④는 신화에서 따와 변형한 것이며 ②③⑤는 승려의 일생과 부합되는 테두리 안에서 새롭게 창안한 모티브들로 판단이 되었다. 이들 모티브가 승려의 비문에서 빈번하게 등장하는 까닭은 그것이 고승들에게 성스러움과 함께 불교적 인간으로서의 전형성을 갖추는데 적합하다는 인식이 작용한 것으로 보았다. ②③이 구 원의 상을 형상해주며 ①④⑤는 고승의 위력과 법력을 현시하는 이바지 한다고 하겠는데 이런 점 때문에 중세시기를 넘어 후대까지 모티브로서의 개별성을 유지할 수 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 중세 비문 소재 승려의 이야기는 후대 승려들의 일생담을 구성하고 체계화하는 전거로 작용한 것은 물론 불교서사를 넘어 여타 역사인물의 전승담의 형성에도 영향을 미친 것으로 보인다. 중세 불교금석문 소재 승려의 일생담은 이제 불교사적 자료로서만 치부해버릴 수 없다. 그것은 신화시대를 넘어 중세 서사가 어떻게 전개되었는지 정황을 간파할 수 있게 해주며 중세이후 근세 전승담의 서사적 특성을 이해할 수 있게 해주는 前史的 의미 또한 각별히 함축하고 있는 것이다.
The biggest obstacle to restoration of ancient literary history is an absolute insufficiency of material evidences about the dates of past history. Incidentally, even though such a limitation may be overcome reasonably with epigraphic sources, there have still been very few examples of the use of epigraphic evidences for archeological studies on narrative literature. In view of that issue, this study adopted for further discussion a selection of 46 epigraphs (authored by Buddhist monks) with certain narrative nature among all Buddhist epigraphic artifacts in South Korea. In order to make clear the points at issue for discussion, this study adopted a methodology of analysis based on key motives. Based on 5 key motives that often appear in the epigraphs of Buddhist monks─e.g. ① Dream of conception, ② Evolution, ③ Healing of princess, ④ Escort by tiger, ⑤Expulsion of dragon and establishment of Buddhist temples─, this study sought to further analyze the historical origin, generative aspects and potential effects of those epigraphs on other narrative literatures. Here, ① and ④ were considered as adapted versions of mythical stories, whereas ②, ③ and ⑤ were considered as newly created motives within a framework corresponding to the lifetime of Buddhist monks. The reason these motives often appear in the epigraphic works of Buddhist monks is that they are recognized to satisfy sanctity and typicality as Buddhist person by high priests in Buddhism. ② and ③ prepare the statue of salvation, and ①, ④ and ⑤ contribute to the authority and Dharmic power of Buddhist high priests. That is why these motives could possibly keep their haecceity even to this generation from the medieval period. Buddhist monk stories from medieval epigraphic sources worked as references for organizing and formulating life stories of Buddhist monks in future generations, and also had certain effects on creating stories of oral tradition about other historic figures beyond Buddhist narrative literature. Life stories of Buddhist monks from medieval Buddhist epigraphic sources cannot be simply considered as a historical source of Buddhism. These life stories can be helpful to read whole contexts of how medieval narrative stories developed beyond the age of myth, and have a special implication of complete history to help us understand narrative characteristics of modern monk stories based on oral tradition after medieval period.
