| 摘要 | The chapter examines why Queen Jönggen, one of the most important and powerful individuals in sixteenth-century East Asia, was left out of later Mongolian histories dating to the Qing period. She married four generations of fathers and sons. In this regard, the historical realities of levirate marriage present an interesting example of the profound transformation that Mongolian culture experienced under the influence of Buddhism. It brought to an end a tradition that had shaped the familial norms and social structures of the steppe for at least two thousand years. |
