| 摘要 | Following the introduction of democracy to Mongolia, writers could express their understanding of religion. This chapter addresses the syncretic nature of Buddhism and Shamanism in the pre-revolutionary Mongolian nomadic culture, the expression of which was continued in secret during the Soviet period, and was revived and began to exert an explicit influence on the literary scene. It also explores the more traditional thematic approaches taken by writers such as D. Nyamsüren, G. Mend-Ooyo, and O. Dashbalbar. During the 1990s this became an increasingly important focus against which younger writers measured their philosophical and artistic oeuvres. While the deaths of Dashbalbar and Nyamsüren have left Mend-Ooyo's visionary and nostalgic poetry as a central plank in the modern canon, over the past decade more innovative writers have challenged the assumptions about Mongol nomadic culture that were presumed to be vital to the literary expression of spirituality. |
