晚唐張議潮入朝事暨歸義軍與嗢末的涼州之爭再探 - 以新出李行素墓志及敦煌文書張議潮奏表為中心=Zhang Yichao’s Detainment in the Tang Empire Capital and the Battle for Liangzhou between the Gui-yi-jun and Wamo Armies in the Late Tang Dynasty - Research Focusing on the Newly Unearthed Epitaph of Li Xingsu and Dunhuang Documents about Zhang Yichao
The regime of the Gui-yi-jun army aimed for long-term control of Liangzhou. It can be known from Li Xingsu’s epitaph that the Gui-yi-jun army was forced to abandon Liangzhou, however, under the mediation of the central government in the 8th year of the Xiantong era during the Tang dynasty, following which Liangzhou was controlled by the Wamo tribe.During this mediation,Li Xingsu persuaded Zhang Yichao to submit to the royal court, which placed the latter under complete control of the central government.Furthermore, the central government then weakened the Gui-yi-jun army by dividing Liangzhou and succeeded in controlling and suppressing their opponent by taking advantage of the martial strength of the local Wamo tribe. The Wamo exhibited characteristics of Xiqiang culture, which is similar to Tibetan culture, and as the Wamo had once been taken as slaves or low-order citizens of Tibetan tribes,it is likely for this reason that Wamo was called"Qiang"in Li Xingsu’s epitaph. The main structure of Wamo society is closely associated with the Dangxiang(Tangut)and Supi(Sumpa)tribes.Wamo’s control of Liangzhou lasted until the late Tang and Five Dynasties and strongly influenced the tribes of the Hexi Corridor.
