| 摘要 | In the United States and Europe, the fields of humanities and social sciences have recently undergone an "ontological turn." Scholars are reevaluating the presuppositions in Eurocentic, modern understanding of the world. One of the major presumptions in Euromodern ontologies is a separation between the human and the animal, or between humans and nature. In posthumanistic scholarship, animals and other nonhumans are now drawing more attention both as actors and ethically relevant bethings, and thus, as beings worthy of altruism. In particular, relational and flat ontologies are being used as new theoretical tools to approach studies in a variety of fields. In fields such as anthropology and cultural geography, multi-species studies are becoming more and more popular. These studies often involve the assumption that relational ontologies better represent the ontological views of the studied human community, but few projects have used relational ontologies as a theoretical understanding of Buddhist thinkers such Shi Chao-hui and Shi Sheng-yen? What are their strengths and weaknesses in representing multi-species relationships in studies of Taiwanese Buddhism? What further insight do Taiwanese Buddhist communities and thinkers have to offer the current dialogue on relational ontologies? In my paper, I examine how relational ontologies can be applied, or may need modification to be applied to function as useful tools in representing multi-species studies in a Buddhist context. In particular, I intend to evaluate how relational ontologiees in recent English-language scholarship corrrespond and contrast with Taiwanese Buddhist ontologies, and consider how it affects altruism in multi-species realtionships. |
