| 摘要 | Western ethics has struggled for a long time with a predominant conflict between morality and egoism. On one hand, morality urges us to help those in need. It claims that it is our obligation to help even if that would require some sacrifice of our own good. On the other hand, it seems reasonable to seek and maximize our own benefit in a way so that we do not have to sacrifice for strangers. How should we resolve this dilemma? Current research may provide some help. It seems that we are rewarded for acting altruistically with a higher level of happiness. In my presentation I would like to focus on the influence of this research to the philosophical discussion and practical consequences. |
