Master Xia Jing Shan was born in Shouguang City in Shandong Province of China and was under the tutelage of Kuo Wei-Qu and received training for a variety of ink paintings including floral, human figure, female portrait, and landscape. At the age of 28, Xia became a Buddhist practitioner under the guidance of Master Nan Ting, and it was during this time that the began to focus on painting Buddhist portraits. Xia once stated that the greatest blessing in his life was to be mentored by Nan Huai-Chin. Nan taught with his words and also through his actions, and Xia regarded the learning of Zen enlightenment as the philosophy that he would follow in life. This essay is an extended study on Xia's paintings and his conception. Referring to the philosophy, geomancy, and the way that Xia conducted himself as a great sage guiding the world's mortal beings is explored through examining his Buddhist foundation and the Zen inspired paintings he created.
