| 摘要 | In the middle of the 6th century, the term “Buddha” was transmitted to Japan from China by way of the Korean Peninsula. This article will first show how the term “Buddha” was not only pronounced according indigenous pantheistic Japanese religious environment was able to adopt the foreign Buddhist religion with relative ease. I will argue that one of the reasons for this is attributable to the Japanese pronunciation of the term Buddha （the Awakened One） as “ho-to-ke” enabled the creation of a Buddhist paradigm that was acceptable to the host Japanese culture. I will also discuss the relationship between the Buddhist teachings of salvation and the mental impact of other Japanese words, such as “toku/ tokeru,” “hodoku/hodokeru” and “yurusu/yurumu.” |
