| 摘要 | Echoes of Enlightenment is a study of the life and legacy of the fourteenth‐century female Tibetan Buddhist saint Sönam Peldren. Focusing in particular on a newly available hagiography, and closely considering issues of gender and sainthood, Bessenger explores how the text is shaped both by its authors' agendas as well as by the genres of Tibetan religious literature. Moreover, the book considers what insights Peldren's life and legacy may provide into the social and textual maneuverings of Tibetan Buddhist saint production. Chapter 1 narrates Sönam Peldren's life story. Through a close literary analysis of the Life of Sönam Peldren in Chapter 2, Bessenger contends that the text is a likely a multiauthored document composed over time, despite its self‐descriptions as a cohesive text that was orally composed and narrated by a single author. Through a careful examination of the religious rhetoric employed by Sönam Peldren and her interlocutors, Chapter 3 suggests—despite the text's claims to the saint's distance from religious training and practice—that both the saint and her biographers were immersed in a Kagyü milieu and influenced by (non‐monastic) tantric adept and “mad saint” models. Chapter 4 explores the Life's treatment of gender vis‐à‐vis other Tibetan Buddhist hagiographies, and Chapter 5 traces Sönam Peldren's posthumous legacy. Sönam Peldren's biography (our knowledge of which is now available through Bessenger's book) is among a very small group of extant textual records of prominent Tibetan female religious figures. With its interdisciplinary approach and elegant writing, Bessenger triumphs in bringing this extraordinary saint's life into view. Echoes of Enlightenment is essential reading not only for scholars and students of Tibetan religion, culture, and history, but also for anyone with general interests in hagiography and gender. |
