| 摘要 | DiValerio combines translation, textual and historical analysis, and ethnography to offer the most comprehensive study to date on Tibet's nyönpas, or religious madmen. Analyzing the literature associated with three of the most famous nyönpas, all born in the 1450s and of the Kagyü lineage, he explores the broader themes of holy madness and Tibet's changing religious culture. DiValerio begins with the basic life trajectories of the Madmen of Ü and Tsang, including their abandonment of monasticism and adoption of such seemingly inexplicable behavior as throwing feces at the public and smearing their bodies with blood. He demonstrates how such conduct, deemed thoroughly un‐Buddhist by some of their contemporaries, was the enactment of tantric fundamentalism, whereby the madmen followed literally tantric dictates that other religious specialists observed only figuratively, if at all. Such actions also drew on an accepted repertoire of mad saintly behavior, reflecting the madmen's awareness of how their actions would reverberate in the social sphere. This social awareness contributed to the work of the latter part of their lives, wherein both madmen undertook projects to impact the wider Tibetan public and strengthen their vision of the Kagyü. DiValerio then addresses today's most beloved holy madman, Drukpa Kunley, demonstrating that the modern folk hero is only a caricature of the historical person, who was primarily a critic of religious hypocrisy rather than the bawdy libertine commonly represented. DiValerio's analysis of the social and narrative processes that create mad sainthood provides a nuanced account of this fascinating tradition, making a significant contribution to the study of Tibetan religion. |
