| 摘要 | Wonderfully curated and intelligently arranged, the volume brings together a number of renowned scholars whose original research contributions both sketch out salient features of text, practice, art, institution, and sect within the broad scope of the Buddhist tradition and which do so with careful attention to the current state of, and research trends within, the field of Buddhist studies. The volume is arranged with historical overviews of Buddhism in Central Asia, China, Korea, Japan, and Tibet to serve as an introduction, is then followed by thematic sections which cross time, space, and discipline, and concludes with chapters on Buddhism in modernity. This works well as a reader for an undergraduate course, though the editorial choice to minimize scholarly notation, as stated in the introduction, may limit its utility for specialists in the field, whom the introduction also says that the book is designed for. Finally, despite the title, readers looking for studies of Inner Asian Buddhism will be disappointed to discover that the topic is not dealt with in any sustained way outside of the historical overview offered in the introductory material. Overall, the volume is heartily recommended as an undergraduate reader in East Asian and, to a lesser extent, Tibetan Buddhism. |
