| 摘要 | Scion of a family of scholars, Yijie Tang (1927–2014) was lauded as “China's top philosophy scholar and Sinology master” in Chinese media after his death. And yet, this collection of translated articles, with its token references to the Marxist–Leninist canon, illustrates how political ideology has impacted academics in the People's Republic of China (PRC). Of unequal scope and quality, the 25 papers—originally published from the early 1980s on—prove more useful as primary sources to understand post‐1949 Chinese thought than as secondary ones for religious studies. Although Tang's opposition of his “Harmony in Diversity” to Huntington's “Clash of Civilizations” is praiseworthy, one wonders about the rationale for publishing today a book stating that “not just any kind of superstition can be called religion, although religion often embodies a good deal of superstitious elements.” Misleading translations add to embarrassment—for example, “Daoist practices” for daoshu in a historical context where dao (a “way”) referred to virtually any teaching. Some of the translators chose the easy yet essentialist option of merely transcribing Chinese terms supposed to “have no close equivalents in Western philosophy,” resulting in semi‐translations such as “Emotional (xi, yue, nu, ai, bei) qi is due to qing.” Not only do the pinyin and Wade–Giles romanization systems alternate, their occasional accretive use encumbers page layout and disrupts the reading. All Chinese characters, whether in text or in appended glossaries, are in simplified form. There is no index or bibliography. |
