| 摘要 | Carter's latest book is an excellent introduction to the work of some of the major figures of the Kyoto School of Philosophy. In this book, he discusses the work of major Kyoto School figures Nishida Kitarō (1870–1945), Tanabe Hajime (1885–1962), and Nishitani Keiji (1900–1990), and it also includes Watsuji Tetsurō (1889–1960), who is often considered to be on the fringes of the group. The book begins with a short but comprehensive introduction that sketches the historical and philosophical background of the school, including the important influence of Buddhism. Each chapter begins with an intellectual biography, briefly discusses the political views of the philosopher, and then moves into discussion and analysis of key works, themes, and concepts. There is also very helpful glossary and bibliography, and Carter's strength at giving concrete, accessible examples of complex philosophical concepts is evident throughout the book. As it is accessible to upper level undergraduates as well as graduate students, if read alongside some introductory readings on Buddhist philosophy (a theme that permeates the work of the Kyoto School) and the original writings by the figures introduced, the book provides the foundation for a first‐rate syllabus for an entire course on the Kyoto School. |
