| 摘要 | This book explores various forms of self‐inflicted violence in Chinese culture, with chapters that exhaustively examine the themes of writing in blood (Buddhist scriptures and memorials to the court), extreme filial piety (cutting one's own flesh to serve one's parents), widow chastity (suicide or self‐mutilation to avoid violation), and ritual exposure (exposing one's body to the elements to summon rain). After a rich survey of relevant theoretical and comparative scholarship, the author examines each of these practices against the backdrop of the strong Confucian proscription against self‐harm as an unfilial act. The book locates these practices within the particular context of cultural trends in sixteenth‐ and seventeenth‐century China, explained in a thorough overview in the first chapter. The prominence of these forms of self‐inflicted violence in textual sources is well documented here, although it is difficult to conclude from this that the actual practices were as widespread as the author suggests, or that the period in question saw a greater proliferation of such practices. Moreover, the author might have gone further in explaining how these diverse practices are better understood by locating them within the single category of self‐inflicted violence. Nevertheless, this book brings rich data and analysis to the study of religion and culture in China, and its lucid and comprehensive narration makes it well suited to specialists, non‐specialists, and graduate students. |
