| 摘要 | The purpose of this paper is to show the history of thoughts, events and activities of Chinese laypeople from 1st century B.C. up to 13th century A.D. and its relationship with the development of Buddhism in China, as well as its interactions with Confucianism and Taoism. The thesis demonstrates the function of laypeople in three aspects: the role of negotiators between Buddhist Saṅgha and imperial government; the role of compromisers between Buddhist and Confucian/Taoist intellectuals; the role of interpreters of Indian Buddhist thought and innovators of new localized doctrine. Through this study the reader may understand how Buddhist doctrine and practice evolved when it spread from one civilization to another, with regard to its interaction with local politics, society and culture.
