Focusing on "Dwelling in Mountain and Autumn Twilight"( 《山居秋暝》), a well-known poem by Wang Wei, this paper sets up a cross-cultural passage between Zen Buddhism and Somaesthetics, a theory of aesthetics by Richard Shusterman. The paper stresses their common interest in non-duality in order to show points of cross-cultural connection and interpretation between China and West, and between ancient and modern times. In this paper, non-duality refers not only to transcendence between dualities such as silence/noise, stillness/movement, outside/inside, subject/object, body/mind, human/nature, as illuminated in Wang Wei’s poem. It also refers to transcendence between different cultures. The paper focuses on translation as a mode of intercultural intersemiotics, beyond oral and written discourse. |
