| 摘要 | For almost a century, the text of The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra published by the Japanese scholar Bunyiu Nanjio (Kyoto: Otani University Press, 1st ed. 1923; 2nd ed. 1956) has been the standard edition for the study of this key Mahāyāna scripture. In spite of its numerous undeniable merits, the edition contains, however, its problematic readings. Furthermore, new manuscripts of the text have been discovered meanwhile. A new critical edition becomes, therefore, a desideratum. My current research project, part of which is published here, is dedicated to this end. My paper, scheduled to be published in two instalments, contains a critical trilingual edition of the Rāvan.ādhyes.anā-parivarta, the first chapter of the Lan.kāvatāra-sūtra: (1) Sanskrit text, which collates the readings of the manuscripts known to Nanjio as well as of the newly discovered manuscripts; (2) Tibetan text, collating several Canon editions; and (3) two Chinese translations, i.e. Bodhiruciʼs and Śikṡānandaʼs, for which likewise I consulted a few Chinese Tripiṫaka editions and manuscripts. (The other extant Chinese translation, Guṅabhadraʼs, lacks the Rāvan.ādhyes.anā-parivarta.) The Chinese translations are also accompanied by the traditional Japanese kundoku renderings. My edition of the Rāvan.ādhyes.anā-parivarta is preceded by an Introduction consisting of three parts: 1.1. is an overview of the main contributions dedicated to the scripture. 1.2. deals with the cultural background of the Lan.kāvatāra-sūtra, focusing upon the Rāmāyan.a, the famous Indian epic which seems to be presupposed by the narrative development of our text, mainly in its first chapter. The section also takes look at the Rāmāyan.a in Buddhist literature in general. 1.3. represents a discussion of my editing conventions and main textual witnesses with the abbreviations used herein. |
