The most of doctrine which are in original Buddhist text delivered for mendicants who practice Buddhism. As well as can be found some discourses which were explained for lay disciples who follow the teaching of the Buddha, specially for lay women. Do the Buddhist texts provide some evidence that make us understand how the Buddha taught lay women and make them emancipation? The during of the Republican, there were tow Buddhist scholars named, Ven. Ci Hang and Ou Yang. The Sujāta sutra has been chosen by them in simultaneously mentioning that should be read its’ contents by the lay women. Because of this discourse, therefore, capable to understand how the Lord expound dhamma which is followed by the lay women. At the beginning, in this discussion, have studied the method of entering from the canon’s catalog and proceeded to search for Chinese canons and four Pāli nīkāya sutra’s catalogs. Eventually, found out the rational development of this sutra in the history. Next, using documents have been learned the way of different dissection of the important figures in this sutra; the main woman character (Sujātā), husband (kāla), father in law (Anātapindika), mother in law (puññalakhana). Then invested very deeply, the meaning of main roles’ name, family background, the reason and influence of studying Buddhism and achievements in afterwards. Then inquired about the moral principles of family position and manner, and also other sutras was used as measure for supplement of the meaningful subjects which has been described the husband and wife, mother in law and daughter in law’s ethical discipline. The sermons which have been uttered by the Buddha for lay women has been provided in this discourse, the way of practicing moral principle that should be followed by the lay women too. At first, the Lord Buddha has made Sujāta’s mind with normal and acceptable, three hinder (tatiya nīvarana) and the ten kinds of immoralities (dasa akusala kamma) , the repent and outstanding moralities, direct to emergence of wisdom. Secondly, Blessed One taught the wife and daughter in law common criterion of ethics, ultimately taken three refuge and led them follow the Buddhist ethical conduct in practically and cultivate the accomplishments of the concentration (Samadhi). At last, discuss about the ethical condition which has been explained in this sutra for the lay women and its nature that can be apply for modern society. As well as has discussed how the lay women who live in present react for it. And also has been talked about the Chinese ancient books and records named, “The Book of Rites” , “The Internal regulations” that was explained about the equal and unequal standard which regards to wife. Does this sutra standardize for these ancient Chinese attitudes? If it yeas, how? For these problems may be there little solution in this volume and will be a stepping stone to investigate the Buddhist conception of the lay women.
