Mr. Duan Wenjie became the first deputy director of the Research Institute on Dunhuang Cultural Relics( today’s Dunhuang Academy) to direct the routine work in 1980, and resigned from the leading post of the academy in 1998. For those 18 years, Dunhuang Studies in China had been thriving. It was also a golden age for academic progress, international cooperation and the construction of Dunhuang Academy.Therefore, this period can be called the Duan Wenjie Era in the history of Dunhuang Academy. Mr. Duan attached great importance to academic research. He established the periodic Dunhuang Research, expanded Dunhuang Academy, recruited and trained talents, and found China Dunhuang Grottoes Conservation Research Foundation.
