Yuling, the tomb of the Manchu emperor Qianlong (r.1736-1796), built between 1743 and 1752, is absolutely outstanding and, till now, unique in its kind, for its vaults and its walls are decorated with Buddhist representations as well as with inscriptions in Tibetan and Lantsa scripts (more than 30 000 characters). The tomb also contains the inner coffin of a concubine as well as three outer coffins among which the outer coffin of the emperor. On one side of the emperor's outer coffin three lines in Tibetan are handwritten with golden ink. As for the inner coffin of the concubine, its sides and its top are entirely engraved with Tibetan inscriptions. Though the tomb has been officially opened since 1977, the identification of the mural and coffin inscriptions had not yet been done. In the present article, the author presents the identification of each of the texts engraved on the coffins as well as the likely reason why they have been chosen. It seems that all these inscriptions were integrated in a Buddhist ritual of which traces may be found in India. This ritual aimed at the sacralisation and protection of the place and was thus very close to the one used during the edification of a stūpa. |
