The pagoda is one of the most famous monument in the history both of the NorthernWei dynasty and China. Its base was excavated by archaeologists from the Institute of Ar-chaeology,CASS in 1979. Basing himself on the excavation data and literature, the authorinquires into its original height, proportion, framework, etc., as part of her attempt to un-derstand the wooden-structure pagoda of the late Northern Wei dynasty from an evolution-ary perspective of designing,technique and style. Her studies confirm the literal references.There are however many uncertain variables and possibilities. Her conclusion is just onebased on hither to available data,thus open to revision by the future research and discov-ery.
