| 摘要 | This statue (Pl. V), with an inscription dated the year T‘ai-ho 8 (A. D. 484), stands bare-footed, with a lotus flower in the right hand and with the left hand either holding a scarf or having a small vase or perhaps free, its short skirt and halo stopping short of its pedestal. In a wider sense it can be called Kuan Yin (Avalokiteśvara), but iconographically it should more properly be called Padmapāṇi. Stylistically this statue is situated along the lines of the specimens respectively dated 470,471, 490, 492, 498, 501, 509? (Fig. 2), 513, 514, 516, 522, 531 and 542. Of these, the ones dated 501 and 509 ? hold lotus flowers in their left hands, the skirt of the one dated 513 is considerably longer, and the one dated 542 (Fig. 4) has a halo that touches its pedestal. Approximately contemporary with the subject piece are gilt bronze statues, called Śākyamuni or Maitreya, which are dated 471, 475, 483, 484, 490, 493, 466 and 498 respectively. Although they have their right hands raised and left hands held down with the palms open to the front, their skirts are short and their haloes stop above the pedestals. Excepting the poses of their hands and the absence of crowns, they are by and large similar in form to the Padmapāṇi under discussion. The gilt bronze statues called Kuan Yin, dated 513,516,519,521,531, 540 and 552 respectively, which are similar in manual signs to the abovementioned Śākyamuni or Maitreya and which, like the Padmāpaṇi, wear crowns and ornaments, have long skirts and haloes reaching the pedestals. Similarly wearing long skirts and having haloes touching the pedestals are a group of Kuan Yin statues : one dated 512—516 (Fig. 3) holds a vase in its left hand but the object held in its right hand cannot be a lotus flower; two others, dated 520 and 574 (Fig. 5), raise their right hands with the palms forward; and another dated 539 has a lotus flower in its right hand. In short, the Padmapāṇi style of Kuan Yin images began to show certain changes in about the Yen-ch‘ang era (512-516) towards the end of the North Wei Dynasty, and developed into the ordinary Kuan Yin form of later periods. Excepting those in which the older style was retained, the statues of Kuan Yin in the North Wei Dynasty actually represent Padmapāṇi, of which the subject piece is a typical example. |
