| 摘要 | The fragment of a mural brought to Japan by the Ōtani mission and now in the Korean National Museum (Fig. 1), hitherto said to be from Kumtura, has been identified by the author to have been one of the Thousand Buddha images originally situated at F, f in the plan shown by Fig. 5 along the corridor behind the front wall of the main chamber at the Cave No. 8, Bezeklik. Mr. Huang Wên-pi, who had joined the Sino-Swedish Expedition, introduced in his “Archaeological Notes on Turfan” (Turfan K'ao Ku Chi), published in Shanghai, 1954, two of Thousand Buddhas similar to the above-mentioned mural in the Ōtani Collection. The two images, as reproduced accurately by Mr. Huang, are as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. According to Mr. Huang's original system of numbering, these were in the Bezeklik Cave No. 10. The clothing of the image in the Ōtani Collection is brown, while those reproduced by Mr. Huang are blue and green respectively. The colours on other portions also are differerent to match the colours of the robes. There exists a mural of Thousand Buddhas in the Stein Collection, now kept by the Museum of Central Asian Antiquities, Delhi. This mural was reproduced in F. H. Andrews: Wall Paintings from Shrines in Central Asia, London, 1948, Pl. XXIII in the book, and Fig. 4 of the present article show details of the same mural. From these it can be known that images simlar to the one in the Ōtani Collection and to those reproduced by Huang appear repeatedly in that mural. The said mural is from Cave No. 4 according to Stein's system. This cave, numbered 10 by Huang and 4 by Stein, is identical with the Cave No. 8 in the Grünwedel system, as can be known from A. Grünwedel : Altbuddhistische Kultstätten in Chinesisch-Turkestan, Berlin, 1912, the most detailed report on the caves at Bezeklik based upon extensive studies on the spot. Fig. 536 in Grünwedel's book and Fig. 6 in the present article show the painting on the ceiling of the rear corridor in the same cave. On the curving surface of this ceiling in the shape of an inverted U are painted designs derived from the Latternen Decke and on the borders between the ceiling and the walls below it are horizontal bands of frieze patterns. The friezes are exactly the same as those shown in Pl. XXIII in the above-mentioned Andrews's book. It may thus be asserted that the fragment of the Thousand Buddha mural in the Ōtani Collection is from the Cave No. 8. The fact that these paintings are a slightly roughened version of wall-paintings at Kizil, and, especially, that the Latternen Decke is used as a motif of graphic designs, attests to the eastward spread and modification of the Kizil style. Similar examples are found in quantities in older cave temples in Turfan area, as has been discussed already by Grün-wedel in his Kultstätten. |
