Seng Jia was a Buddhist monk from Central Asia, and was buried in the Temple of King of Universal Light at Sizhou after he died seated in the forth year of the Jinglong reign of the Tang dynasty(710). A figure whom popular legend had attributed a magical capacity and many marvels such as his once turning into a eleven-faced Guanyin, Seng Jia received a honor title "Saint Master of Universal Light and Enlightenment "and was widely worshiped during the Song and Yuan eras. A wooden figurine painted in gold unearthed from the basement of a pagoda of the Xianyan Temple at Rui’an in Zhejiang bears the inscription of the very honor title just mentioned. Many Buddhist temples of the Song or Yuan dynasty had special shrine to him. Finding of his seated statues with closed eyes from a pagoda basement has been reported in recent years from a number of temples including the Ruiguang Temple in Suzhou, Wanfo Temple in Jinhua, the Xingjiao Tmeple in Shanghai, the Baixiang Temple in Wenzhou and the Tianfeng Temple in Ningbo. All this attest to his worship in the period of the Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties. |
