| 摘要 | This paper, "Retired Emperorship in Medieval China: The Northern Wei," argues that the 471 retirement of the Northern Wei emperor Xianzu was a precedent setting and successful ploy designed to stabilize the imperial succession in the direction of a vertical, primogenital mode of succession. Based on the consistent political prominence of the imperial cousins-once-removed (that is, ego's fathers' first cousins), the author maintains that the Northern Wei had to cope with the issue of distant collateral agnates demanding considerable political powers, to the extent of threatening the stability of the throne. The author believes that the Northern Wei pattern indicates the continued influence, in transmuted form, of a pre-imperial nomad confederacy heritage of horizontal succession. |
