The passage from the manuscript to the printed book has resulted with a series of changes including also important modifications for the illustration. Frontispieces, particularly, gained another dimension. Looking at some examples from 11th-13th centuries related to the Sung dynasty (960-1278) as well as to the Liao and Occidental Xia, one can observe that the initial iconical and static character of the image is gradually completed by a narrative content. Thanks to a dynamic presentation, the printed image departs from the art of painting while keeping the frontispiece at a distance from the text of the book at the same time.
