| 摘要 | Neak Pean temple is an ensemble of ponds, located in the middle of a late 12th century reservoir, called Jayataṭāka. Besides its hydraulic agricultural role, the ensemble played a significant religious role as a tīrtha (a sacred bathing place) whose water was understood to purge all sins of those who ritually washed themselves there. It also served metaphorically and symbolically as a “boat” for crossing “the ocean of existence.” This function passionately emphasized by King Jayavarman VII, whose intention was to save all beings from the ocean of existence. The King’s strivings were partly realized by the construction of a “sacred city”, known by its ancient name nagarī jayaśrī in Angkor, which is comprised of two main elements: Preah Khan temple and Jayatataka to the east, in the middle of which Neak Pean is located. |
