| 摘要 | Buddhism played a crucial role in shaping political developments and social patters in ancient and early medieval Korean history. Between the late fourth and the early seventh centuries Buddhism primarily served as a channel through which monarchical interests were articulated; however, Silla``s victory in the war of peninsular conquest and brisk cultural interaction and political understanding with Tang China in the late seventh and the eighth centuries led to an alteration in the character of Buddhism changed with it. This paper aims to understand the significance of Buddhism in Korea in the new political and social context of the seventh and the eighth centuries. Focusing chiefly on Buddhist monks and Buddhist rituals, organized by them, this paper will analyse the ways in which Buddhism and the state of Silla forged a mutually empowering relationship. |
