| 摘要 | ‘In theory, there’s no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.’ — Yogi Berra First, it is a great pleasure to express my gratitude to Jack Llewellyn and the other members of the panel sponsored by the Dharma Association of North America (DANAM) for their thoughtful comments on my book, The Self Possessed, presented in November 2010, as an adjunct panel to the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR), held in Atlanta. The panel members were Andrew Fort, Chakravarthi Ram-Prasad, Jack Llewellyn, Sthaneshwar Timalsina, and Neil Dalal. Their insights have proven helpful in clarifying issues pertaining to possession that constantly demand rethinking. Let me also take this opportunity to thank the presiding organisers of DANAM, Adarsh Deepak and Rita Sherma, for their many years of efforts in seeking recognition for DANAM and for every year inviting provocative and timely panels; the interest in South Asian religion is too great for the AAR to handle, so DANAM has taken the necessary lead in supplementing the AAR’s offerings, to the gratitude of a large number of scholars. I should state immediately that my thoughts on possession have migrated considerably since The Self Possessed was published in 2006, or, more precisely, from the time I completed most of the manuscript two years earlier. To a much greater extent than I expressed in those 735 pages, my thoughts on what exactly transpires in possession states have become more decisive, and will be published in the coming years. I have continued to work on the topic, periodically publishing papers, focussing, firstly, on texts that I did not thoroughly examine for the book, particularly in Mahāyāna Buddhism; secondly, on possession processions in the lower and middle Himalayas (in Himachal Pradesh and the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand), certain Muslim dargāhs … |
