| 摘要 | Now in a second edition, this textbook provides a comprehensive and engaging introduction to world religions. It opens with a brief discussion of the study of religion using different lenses: phenomenology, anthropology, sociology, psychology, theology, and critical theory. Next, it provides illuminating overviews of the religions of antiquity, indigenous religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Most similar textbooks, including the first edition, discuss Sikhism next. However, in the second edition, Sikhism is discussed after Islam. It may throw off the reader initially, but as Sikhism has such strong linkages to Sufism, it is a smart choice made by the editors. The focus then shifts to East Asian religions, specifically Chinese religions, followed by Japanese and Korean traditions. Lastly, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are discussed before wrapping up with new religious movements and the spiritual but not religious. Each tradition is explored from its origin to the shape it has taken in today's society. The accompanying, well‐selected photographs provide a realistic visual lens, thereby making the myriad worlds of religions come to life to the first‐time reader. What sets this new edition apart are the interactive pedagogical approaches that feature more visual learning tools—maps, charts—and insightful study questions and lists for further readings. This book is highly recommended for instructors teaching an introductory course on world religions. |
