| 摘要 | This is the third volume in Gutschow and Michaels's series on religion and text in the Kathmandu valley. It is large format with double columns, which means it is actually twice as long as the page numbers would normally indicate. The first two volumes were titled Growing Up (RSR 36: 96–97) and Handling Death. With this volume on marriage, they have covered many of the important transitional stages of life among the Newars. The first three parts cover all aspects of marriage: from matchmaking to love marriages, to wedding bands, to the differences in marriage customs between Newar Hindus, Buddhists, and butchers (as an example of marriage in the “unclean” castes). Also covered here are expense management, women's songs, and the importance and symbolism of betel nut preparations or “paan.” A final narrative section addresses the “grammar” of Newar rituals, particularly rites of passage. Structuralist ritual theory of this type has been a driving concern of Michaels's for many years. He develops categories of framing repetition, substitution, extension, omission, transfer, and many more. Ritual theorists will be interested to test his method and conclusions. The very long fourth part contains the edited Newari texts (with Sanskrit mantras) and their translations. Ethno‐Indology, Michaels's term, is characterized by fieldwork and textual work that can be brought together, and indeed that is the case here. The final section contains lengthy and helpful indexes of mantras, elements of Newar ritual, and vocabulary. The 55‐minute DVD is splendid. It can and should be used in any number of classes on Indian culture and civilization, along with selections from the book. Gutschow and Michaels are to be congratulated for their impressive work. |
