| 摘要 | This engaging and thought‐provoking book is a cross‐disciplinary, global, multicultural, and multireligious compilation of essays focused on the relationship between religion and technology. Historically it has been understood that authentic divine presence cannot be manifest as an instrument in the service of human hands. This book seeks to revisit and revise the presumably problematic relationship between religion and technology by locating “god in the machine.” The text emphasizes that technology consists of things that can serve as instruments of religious knowledge, power, imagination, and experience. Stolow's efforts to gather divergent examples of this intersection help to enhance the themes drawn from them and expand the conversation beyond predominantly Western Christian discourses. The breadth of experiences surveyed includes Buddhist medicine and prayer in Japan, biomedical interventions among Muslim people in Egypt, documentary film used by Jewish people with disabilities in Israel, an electric touch machine used by Pentecostals in Ghana, and online representations of Vodou in Haiti. A section on equipment explores a range of instruments, tools, and devices that mediate religious subjectivity and the cosmos. A section on bio‐power illuminates new ways of understanding religious identity and practice as well as portraying religious imagination within technologically mediated bio‐power fields and modern bio‐politics. A third section investigates ideas of religious identity, knowledge, belonging, and performance within technologically infused cultures. Graduate students and scholars in areas such as religious studies, sociology, and anthropology can use this book as an introduction to the conversation or to the supplement‐related research. |
