| 摘要 | On the one hand, this bold book provides an ideal textbook for courses on death and dying in world religions. In Part 1, Moreman covers six major religious complexes—ancient religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism—in a manner that introduces undergraduates to their basic doctrines while also highlighting each tradition's internal diversity. What sets this book apart from previous scholarship is Part 2, where Moreman details contemporary studies of the paranormal: mediumship, out‐of‐body experiences and near‐death experiences, cases of the reincarnation type and apparitions. Moreman is a circumspect yet sensitive reader of these studies and case histories, and undergraduates and scholars alike will benefit from exposure to the last 150 years of study in this area. On the other hand, the ambitious conclusion this book draws requires more rigorous argumentation. While his conclusion that the best explanation for both the “common core” of afterlife reports and the veridical aspects of certain paranormal events is a kind of nonlocal mind is reasonable, his turn to “mysticism” as experiences of “unity” that are “shared across all religions” to validate this notion of a shared mind draws on preconstructivist figures like James and Stace. Katz is discarded in three sentences with a charge of infinite regression, but any theory of a universal mysticism requires a more nuanced version of how nonlocality and contextuality relate. A sound version of this argument would require more reflexivity in categories, a greater appreciation of difference within superficial sameness, and a more robust theory of nonlocality. |
