| 摘要 | This ambitious book explores the thesis that interreligious encounter is grounded in a mutual recognition of lack on the part of the persons and traditions engaged. Moral struggle—the struggle to bridge the gap between what we believe and what we do—provides the lens through which to investigate the “classic” persons of two religious traditions: Bonaventure, a thirteenth‐century Christian scholastic, and Buddhaghosa, a fifth‐century systematizer of Theravadin Buddhist thought. The book has two parts. In Part 1, “Questions and Contexts,” after introducing the concept of the religious person as “classic,” the author provides as background detailed summaries of contrasting Christian and Buddhist religious cosmologies and views on material simplicity. In Part 2, “Ideas, Practices, and Persons,” the author provides a detailed comparison of these two “classic persons” on the problem of moral struggle and related themes. One of the most interesting aspects of this study is the program for the field of comparative theological ethics, namely to adopt a “transformative rationale” grounded in a mutual recognition of lack, and the commitment to take on the hard comparisons, for example, Bonaventure and Buddhaghosa. Less convincing is the attempt to present moral struggle (with its emphasis on volition) as a “classic question” within the Buddhist tradition. |
