| 摘要 | With Catherine Cornille as general editor aided by a prestigious editorial board, this new series of Christian commentaries on non‐Christian sacred texts offers groundbreaking contributions to the now established discipline of Christian comparative theology. The fourth of six volumes published to date (four on Hindu texts, two on Buddhist texts), Lefebure and Feldmeier's commentary on the reputed sayings of the Buddha does not disappoint. Each chapter consists of three sections: a fresh translation of the root text from the Pali (Feldmeier), the wider Buddhist context and clarification of those verses (Feldmeier), and a Christian response (Lefebure). Each chapter, not to mention the entire volume, delivers a rich if demanding experience to the reader, who can oscillate back and forth between these three sections with great profit. The Christian response sections tend to be more delicate than heavy handed, resisting the temptation to offer meta‐perspectives on the root text or on “Buddhism,” for the commentators acknowledge prudently that “the parts do not require a whole or demand only one vision of the whole.” Instead, by offering many discrete conversation partners from both biblical testaments, as well as the contemplative monastic and desert traditions, Lefebure's comparisons tend more toward theological description than argumentation, more toward establishing an interreligious conversation not between static traditions but particular voices from each exploring the wisdom he identifies as sapientia. This volume stands as an exemplar of interreligious prudence and should interest Buddhists, Christians, and those soberly committed to doing theology in the presence of others. |
