| 摘要 | In this meticulously researched and broad‐ranging book, Brekke asserts that Western and non‐Western fundamentalisms are more alike than different. A historian of religion, Brekke argues that fundamentalism arises as a reaction to the differentiation that accompanies modernization. Differentiation divorces education, governing, legal practice, and economics from a religious basis of belief and practice and thus causes traditional religious elites to lose their position of authority in society, paving the way for new religious authorities to arise from outside the established system. Illustrations are provided from Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, and Hinduism, with case studies looking at events in Egypt, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, and the US. This theory is economical and cogent and carries a great deal of explanatory power. Other works have considered fundamentalism as an ideology that critiques modernity, or as a set of practices carried out by a charismatic figure. Brekke's focus on fundamentalism as a strategy to build institutions and authority is thus novel and unique. In a work of this scope, however, it is perhaps inevitable that some simplifications might occur. Arguably, American fundamentalism is not as monolithic as presented here. In addition, one might like more explanation as to how case studies were chosen since, for example, neither Saudi Arabia nor Afghanistan appears in the cites on Islam. Written in a simple and accessible style, the book assumes no prior knowledge of religious history. This work will surely become a classic and will be widely used in undergraduate and graduate classes in the social sciences. |
