| 摘要 | This Christian commentary on the Buddhist Heart Sutra is the fifth book in the Christian Commentaries on Non‐Christian Sacred Texts Series, which seeks to promote interfaith interface for mutual understanding and enrichment between/among believers of different religions. This book is an in‐depth development and expansion of John Keenan's previously published works in this area, in which he emphasizes the value of (re‐)interpreting Christian doctrines such as the Incarnation and the Trinity through the lenses of Mahayana concepts. The two major theses for the book are: 1) the Christian scripture has been historically interpreted through Greco‐Roman philosophical frameworks; and, 2) the Christian scripture, especially the Gospel of John, can be understood anew and better through Mahayana categories. The authors “believe that the Heart Sutra can provide a new avenue for understanding the Gospel of John.” In particular, they contend that the Mahayana anthropology of “no self” (self‐emptiness) serves as a better “reading grid for the Gospel of John” than Greek anthropology and metaphysics. As the authors acknowledge, this book flows more like a Buddhist interpretation of the Gospel of John, rather than a Christian interpretation of the Heart Sutra. Whether the authors' interpretation of the Gospel of John based upon the Heart Sutra's teachings is faithful in doctrinal standards of the Christian scripture/tradition will remain a source of debate. Yet whether the reader views the author's claims with suspicion or enthusiasm, this book is nevertheless a must‐read for serious students and practitioners actively engaged in Buddhist–Christian dialogue. |
